PONDA: Goa Dairy has said that its milk production has crossed 78,000 litres per day, while its sale has crossed 81,000 litres per day in the Goan market.
Besides, those dairy farmers who had switched over to SUMUL are gradually returning to Goa Dairy and those who returned are collectively supplying 2500 litres of milk per day to Goa Dairy.
Goa Dairy Managing Director Navso Sawanth said that two schemes – a revised Kamdenu Scheme and cattle feed scheme – helped to increase the milk production and bring back the farmers who had switched over to SUMUL.
According to Sawant, the cattle feed scheme launched by Goa Dairy two month ago proved useful in many ways. Since the feed is rich in protein, he said, there has been increasing demand for the same which is produced at the dairy’s Usgao plant. On its launch, the sale of the cattle feed was around 60-70 metric tonnes per month, which has now increased to 100 metric tonnes per month. Sawant expects the demand for the cattle feed to increase in the coming months.
Sawanth credited the increase in production and distribution of milk to quality and freshness, despite the competition from SUMUL.
Sawant said that SUMUL had commenced with a supply of 5500-6000 litres per day, however, the same has been affected due to the return of farmers to Goa Dairy.
Sawant said Goa Dairy is trying to increase buffalo milk production and it needs around 20,000 litres of buffalo milk per day to meet the demand. While around 10,000 litres are supplied by Goan farmers, the rest is imported from Karanataka and Maharashtra, he added.
