MARGAO: Goa Forward Party (GFP), the coalition partner of the BJP government in Goa and the regional partner of NDA, has rejected the idea of one nation one election. This idea was pitched by the NDA government at the Centre recently.
GFP President Vijai Sardesai, in a letter to the Law Commission, stated his opposition on having simultaneous elections for the State and Central assemblies. “Such an action is totally against the spirit of federalism,” he said.
“Notwithstanding nominal benefits, the proposal for simultaneous elections will be totally against the spirit of federalism, which is a fundamental feature of our Constitution,” he said in his letter to the Law Commission.
Vijai argued that simultaneous elections are not favourable to the legitimate regional aspirations of the citizens of the nation.
This letter by the Goa Forward Party comes one day ahead of a crucial meeting with heads of all political parties called by the Law Commission for a structured discussion on the possibility of materialising one nation one election.
