Goa Human Rights Commission Orders Removal of Eviction Notice in Socorro Case

The Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) on Tuesday directed the Socorro village panchayat secretary to remove an eviction notice within 48 hours that was pasted on a house linked to a man arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a minor.

The Commission intervened after taking cognisance of the matter, stating that due process of law must be followed and that punitive action should not be taken without proper legal authority. The house in question is reportedly in the possession of the accused, who is currently under arrest in connection with the case.

The GHRC’s direction underscores the need to uphold legal procedures and human rights, even in cases involving serious allegations, while ensuring that administrative actions do not violate established norms.

Further action, if any, will be subject to legal provisions and the outcome of ongoing investigations, the Commission indicated.
