Goa police happy with spectators behaviour

Goa police has thanked spectators for staying calm although the scheduled one-day international cricket match between India and Australia was abandoned today due to soggy ground conditions.
Police spokesperson SP (Special Branch) Atmaram Deshpande said the department has expressed gratitude to its several thousand spectators for maintaining discipline at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium at Fatorda.
“We know that people arrived here as early as 5am and kept patience till 12:20 noon when the match was finally called off without a ball being bowled,” said the officer.
Not just Goan cricket lovers, but people from neighbouring places of Karnataka and Maharastra were also among the spectators.
The umpires for the match decided to call off the game after three inspections were carried out at 9am, 11am and 12:20pm. “We are thankful to all cricket lovers who were excited about the match and did not disturb the peace even after the match was cancelled,” he reiterated.
The Fatorda stadium has a capacity of 27,000 people and as per Goa Cricket Association, all stands were full-packed.
The armed security forces including central para military forces were deployed in and around the stadium along with other arrangements made for the match.
