PANJIM: The explosion of festivities in Goa during the Christmas, Sunburn, and New Year’s celebrations attracted a huge number of tourists from all corners of the country, marking the peak of the tourist season.
However, amidst the holiday cheer, a concerning reality has emerged. Despite the positive economic impact on tourism, Goa finds itself in the unenviable position of being the second-highest State in terms of active Covid-19 cases, according to the latest update from the SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium.

As per the most recent data, Goa has reported approximately 61 active Covid-19 cases, trailing behind Kerala which tops with 83 cases, where the resurgence of the virus has been more pronounced. Gujarat has reported 34 cases, while Karnataka and Maharashtra have eight cases each. Following closely are Rajasthan with five cases, Tamil Nadu with four, and two cases each in Telangana, Delhi, and Odisha.
Despite the rise in cases, the Directorate of Health Services has assured the public that there are no serious cases. However, this should not undermine the urgency of taking proactive measures to curb the spread of the virus. Although there may not be need for immediate panic there is need for a collective effort to prioritise public health and safety in these challenging times.
