MARGAO: Reacting to media reports on Iran releasing seven crew members of British oil tanker Stena Impero detained in July in the Persian Gulf for violating international maritime law, the Goan Seamen Association of India said Goan seafarer Govind Naik and members have still not been freed.
Association spokesperson Dixon Vaz said, “Govind Naik along with some more crew members are not yet released. Only the ordinary crew are released but main engine crew are held back. Hope they will be released soon.”
The Tehran Times reported that Iran released seven crew members of Stena Impero detained in July in the Persian Gulf for violating international maritime law.
Announcing their release on Wednesday, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Seyyed Abbas Mousavi said the decision to release some crew members aboard the UK ship was taken on humanitarian grounds.
The sailors – five Indians, one Latvian and one Russian – had already left Stena Impero, Seyyed Abbas Mousavi informed.
