PANJIM: The audience at the packed Kala Academy in Panjim was in for a musical treat as the 4th edition of Goencho Avaz, organised by Herald Group and Ulhas Jewellers, was held with 20 solo singers and 7 duets singers performing at the Konkani singing competition. The contestants in the age group of 15 to 25 years performed evergreen Konkani songs, keeping the audience enthralled.
The singers were backed by the music of Norman Cardozo on keyboard, Sammy Xavier Miguel Braganca on trombone, Victor D’Costa on flute and violin, Sergei Godinho on bass guitar, Antonio C Azavedo on tenor saxophone, Nolvert Cotta on trumpet, John Fernandes on drums and Theodore Alvares on trumpet.
The contestants sang songs that were originally sung by singers like Lorna, Antonette, Rita Rose, Alfred Rose, C Alvares, Ophelia, Bab Peter etc, right from the 1970s to 1990. With their melodious voices, the contestants brought back old memories when these songs were very popular.
A beauty of this competition is the introduction before each performance which gives information of the original song and it’s singers, lyricists and music  composers.
“This competition is a tribute to the original singers, composers and musicians from the new generation to the older generation. From the younger generation itself we will be able to pass on the baton to the next generation. Also, this music is enjoyed by families as everyone falls in love with Konkani music all over again,” said Agnelo de Borim who has been part of the Konkani singing competition since its inception.
The finals will be held on August 6, at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao,  at 10 am.
