Social security scheme unveiled

Panchayat Minister Babu Azgaonkar may have found 14 to be the most appropriate number to launch a novel scheme for rural landless households. On September 14, Goa became the 14th State to launch Aam Admi Yojana, a prestigious social security scheme of the Central Government and State Government.
Azgaonkar said the scheme, which will be implemented with the help of the panchayats and administered by Life Insurance Corporation of India, Goa, will provide insurance cover to the head of the family or one earning member of rural landless households. Those between 18 and 59 years are eligible for the scheme, he stated.
The minister mentioned the premium of Rs 200 per annum towards this scheme would be contributed by the both State and Central Governments on a 50-50 basis (i.e Rs 100 each).
It will cover natural death, accidental death/disability benefit and scholarship benefits, he added.
If the head of the family or one earning member of a rural landless household dies prior to terminal date the sum assured of Rs 30,000 will be paid to the nominee.
The scheme also provides a cover of Rs 75,000 on death or permanent total disability due to an accident, Rs 75,000 for loss of two eyes or two limbs in an accident or loss of one eye and one limb in an accident and Rs 37,500 for loss of one eye or one limb in an accident.
It provides scholarship benefits to a maximum of two children of the beneficiary studying between Std IX and XII. Each child will get Rs 100 per month payable half-yearly on July 1 and January 1 each year.
State will be the nodal agency to identify members to be covered under the scheme in consultation with the panchayati raj institutions.
