VASCO: Goenchea Raponkarancho Ekvott (GRE) General Secretary Olencio Simoes on Saturday demanded that the State government and Water Resource Department should give a serious thought and do a thorough study as to why excessive sand erosion taking place on the Goan beaches namely Velsao, Cansaulim and others for the past few years.
Simoes informed Herald that the State government needs to think and undertake beach nourishment in a natural way rather than building concrete structures.

He also pointed out that one of the main causes of sand erosion could be tonnes of silt which is being removed by doing dredging by the Mormugao Port Trust in the sea area.
Simoes also mentioned that if the government doesn’t act immediately on this matter than in near future the sea water will enter in the coastal settlement area and people will be affected badly.
It may be recalled that last year due to cyclonic condition and excessive rainfall the sea waves were strong and it hit the seashore of Velsao and Cansaulim. In this incident the newly beautified entry point of Velsao beach area got damaged with its well concrete structure and tilling got washed away and also developed cracks.
