PANJIM: Goa government has sought video footage from a news channel where North Goa Superintendent of Police Priyanka Kashyap was allegedly recorded using offensive language with an irate local crowd that was at the receiving end last Thursday after Nigerian nationals went on a rampage in Porvorim after their compatriot’s murder at Parra.
Sources said the State Home Ministry will view the tapes of the ruckus following the complaint made by Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte that the SP allegedly hurled abuses at his supporters. However, department’s senior officers deny that the lady IPS officer was abusive.
“It is a case of misunderstanding… SP North did not abuse anybody. There was no intention to disrespect anybody,” said a senior officer requesting anonymity.
The MLA had protested against her behaviour to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and demanding that she apologize or be transferred. He had then assured that a decision would be taken within 7 days after examination of the facts of the case.
Meanwhile, the video footage will also be used as evidence against locals who blocked the road and assaulted four Nigerians, due to which they were admitted to the GMC. The Chief Minister had warned action against the locals for “taking law into their own hands”.
“People overreacted resulting in the delayed action by the police…I have sympathies for the local people but law is law, they will face serious charges,” he was quoted as saying at a press conference last week.
A total of 52 Nigerians are cooling their heels in jail for blocking NH 17, assaulting police personnel and damaging public properties.
The Nigerians, in separate groups were protesting the brutal murder of one their fellow nationals at Parra on the intervening night of October 30-31. They attacked the police hearse van which was carrying the body and laid it in the middle of the road.
Parrikar maintained the murder was a fall out of an internal gang rivalry in the drug trade while also admitting a ‘minor technical error’ that resulted in the foreigners overpowering the police.
