PANJIM: In a bid to provide relief to the common man due to the spiralling onion prices, the State government has decided to procure onions from the open market and sell them at subsidised rates in fair price shops.
On Wednesday the cabinet approved a proposal for procurement of 1045 MTS of onion from National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) for distribution to ration card beneficiaries against the backdrop of rise in prices of onions.

Addressing the media after the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant said that three kg of onion will be provided to every ration card holder at Rs 32 a kg.
“There is sudden spike in the prices of onion in the State and the retail intervention by the government has been felt necessary,” he said.
He said the Cabinet approved purchase of onion from NAFED at about Rs 28, 000 per MT including transportation (may vary as per actual cost on the day procured, as the price is dynamic and changes daily).
He said the onions will be distributed to the ration card holders at 3 kg per card per month at the selling rate of Rs 32 per kg (including inter-State transportation cost of Rs 1 per kg and fair price shops dealer profit margin at Rs 3 per kg).
