Govt urged to lease fisheries land for ice-plants to store excess catch

PORVORIM: Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas appealed to the government on Wednesday, to allocate land owned by the Department of Fisheries in Colva and other areas to traditional fishermen, to set up ice plants, enabling fishermen to store their excess catch effectively.

Viegas highlighted the challenges faced by fishermen when it comes to storing fish, particularly due to the lack of ice plants. He cited instances from the previous year when fishermen had to discard large quantities of fresh fish and solar shrimps, which hold good market value. The MLA said the fishermen fear that the same issue may recur this year, and stressed that with land, local fishermen can collaborate and invest in mini ice plants.
