Govt’s proposal to supply raw water from Sarzora Lake to Morumugao draws flak

MARGAO: The government’s move to tap raw water from the Sarzora Lake and supply it to Mormugao has met with stiff opposition from the villagers who say that it will have a disastrous impact on the village.

Speaking to reporters, Sabita Mascarehas and few others joined hands to stand for the village  and said that they would in no way allow the government to go ahead with its ‘dubious’ agenda.

It is pertinent to note that recently, Water Resources Department Minister Subhash Shirodkar had visited some of the lakes including Davorlim and Sarzora and River Kushavati enroute to the Salaulim irrigation dam to explore the possibility of tapping raw water.

The Minister had stated that the proposed plans are to meet the demand for potable water for the Salcete and Mormugao taluka for next 25 years. The government have proposed to set in motion the planning process.

Taking serious note of the same, Sabita Mascarenhas said that Sarzora villagers will not allow the government to take raw water from their lake.

“We have heard that the government is planning to take raw water from a lake in Sarzora, but we will not allow it. This lake is being used for several purposes, including for agricultural activities,” she claimed.

Citizens questioned the arbitrary decisions of the government without taking villagers into confidence and warned of agitation if the government moved ahead with the proposed plans.
