PANJIM: The Goa Union of Journalists (GUJ) has condemned Goa Forward Party President Vijai Sardesai for allegedly “insulting” a journalist during a press conference in Panjim.
The GUJ’s objection comes following a written complaint made to the Union by journalist Harish Volvoikar, who alleged that he was treated disrespectfully by Sardesai.
Volvoikar had sought reply to a question from Sardesai on the “Person of Goa Origin” (POGO) Bill, prompting a reaction from Sardesai.
“I’ve not come here to be cross examined like I am in the court. If you want to take down what I am saying, you take it down – otherwise you can go. I am not coming here to be cross examined,” said Sardesai.
Volvoikar in his complaint to the GUJ said, “The statement made by the elected representative was unwarranted and unethical, while discharging my duties.”
In a press statement issued on Sunday, GUJ opined that Sardesai’s “unwarranted behaviour is an attack on the freedom of press” and he should apologise to the journalist.
Sardesai has not reacted to the GUJ statement.
