BICHOLIM: Cyclonic wind accompanied by heavy rains damaged property worth about Rs 5 lakh, besides disturbing normal life in Bicholim on Friday evening.
According to fire sources, fire personnel attended to over 15 calls, as several trees came crashing down on the roads, disrupting traffic. Roof sheets of the Town Centre building were blown away and it came crashing down on a tempo (GA-03-K-359) belonging to Salim Ishak from Mapusa, causing a loss of Rs 20,000.
In all, five houses belonging to Baban Mandrekar, Rajendra Kadkade, Gopal Gaonkar and two others were damaged. There were reports of uprooting of trees on roads at Bordem, Sarmanas, Gaonkarwada, Industrial Estate, Karapur and some other places. Electricity wires were snapped at several places, disrupting power supply electricity in the city.
In another incident which also highlighted the poor quality of work in the new market, wall tiles of a shop belonging to Gajanan Umarye fell after thunder and lightning. Bicholim Police and fire personnel worked hard to restore traffic and clear the debris. Frequent electricity failure was reported throughout the city, causing inconvenience to the people.
