People in the know-how expect heavy onslaught of rainfall on Saturday, as the day falls on the second day of ‘Khojagiri Poornima’, similar to the one they witnessed during last year, the second day after this unique Poornima.
According to the belief, during Khojagiri Poornima, gravitational pull is exceptionally high and this phenomenon invites heavy rainfall during the period.
Since last year’s Canacona floods were witnessed on the second day of this Poornima, residents fears a similar nature’s fury can be a reality this year too.
Incidentally, this year, the Khojagiri Poornima (full moon-day) falls on October 22 (as against last year’s October 1), so people who believes in this theory fears similar to last year’s rainfall trends this year too.
Meanwhile, Canacona witnessed over 2 inches of rainfall since Sunday midnight until Monday afternoon, as the season total touched about 168 inches in the taluka.
Interestingly, officials of Water Resources Department’s Hydrology Cell were seen taking river heights in Galgibaga and Talpona rivers on Monday.
According to sources, the officials measured the water height of river Talpona as 4 mtrs at about 11 am at one of the location, while the same location in Talpona was measured at 3.46 mtrs later in the evening.
The velocity of water is measured at 322 cu.m/per second in river Talpona.
Sources told Herald that Hydrology Cell officials marked and measured about 10 locations in river Talpona and Galgibaga, reportedly as a precautionary measure to examine any spurt of rise in river water at this time of the year.
