PANJIM: Goa is witnessing heavy to very heavy showers for the last two days, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) recording three inches of rainfall in the State in the last 24 hours. The seasonal total is inching closer to 100-inch mark.
According to IMD, the State seasonal total has been recorded at 84 inches till now, which is 10 inches above normal.
After an initial gap of two to three days, the southwest monsoon lashed the State affecting normal life and paralyzing traffic movement. IMD has said that the monsoon currents are active over the state and more heavy showers are expected in the next five days.
Meanwhile, even as the 61-day ban on fishing ends on Sunday midnight, the IMD has warned fishermen not to venture into the seas for the next 24 hours due to rough weather.
“Wind speed will hover around 40 to 45 kmph and may scale up to 55 kmph. The seas will be rough with westerly waves. Fishermen have been advised not to venture out during the next 24 hours,” IMD said.
Marginal water logging was reported in the low-lying areas of Mala, Camrabhat, Bhatlem areas. The fire department officials were kept on 24×7 vigil throughout Saturday and Sunday, with complaints of tree felling, water entering houses, damage to electrical wires, etc being reported.
The onset of southwest monsoon over the coast was delayed by nearly 10 days, it received access rainfall thereafter.
The day temperature has been below normal. The temperature recorded was 25 degrees Celsius. The night temperatures also stood at 23 degrees Celsius, which is also below normal.
In June, the State recorded 48 inches of rainfall while till July 30, the total rainfall was recorded at 36 inches.
