PANJIM: The Horticulture department has decided to start supplying fruits which will be at least 30% cheaper than market rates, chairman and Tivim MLA, Kiran Kandolkar told media Wednesday.
The fruits will include apples, watermelons, sweet limes, papaya,s bananas and pomegranates.
“Initially we are starting these five to six fruits. We have already got orders from 40 outlets,” Kandolkar told assembled media persons, adding that they would supply all available fruits after around 15 days. The rates will be almost 30 to 40% less than prevailing market rates.
There are 750 horticulture outlets all over Goa that are already supplying vegetables. Some of the vegetables are being supplied at subsidized rates.
The chairman said that they had surveyed the market for the past couple of weeks and also got fruit rates from places like Pune after deciding to procure the fruits from Belgaum.
The horticulture department will also supply onions from Friday @ Rs 62 to 65 per kg (dry) and @ Rs 42 to 45 wet variety.
“We will be selling both types of onions,” he said.
