Hotelier’s son arrested for alleged rape

PANJIM: A 30-year-old son of a noted hotelier in the capital city has been taken into custody on charges of allegedly kidnapping and raping an underage girl. Accused Varun Nayyar was arrested on Sunday following a complaint filed by the 13-year-old victim’s parents at Porvorim police station.

The incident, according to the complaint, occurred on August 20 when the accused kidnapped their daughter and raped her. “The accused had sexually abused her in the past as well. On the day of the crime, the victim with dyslexia narrated the incident to her parents soon after which they approached the police station with a complaint,” a police source said quoting the complaint copy. Both the victim and accused were thereafter sent for medical examination.

It is learnt that the accused got acquainted with the girl at a shop in Panjim where he tried to get friendly with her and had even exchanged his phone number with her. Nayyar would often phone the girl and force her to meet him, the source said.

The police have registered an offence for rape, kidnap and other relevant sections of the POCSO Act and Goa Children’s Act. 

He will be produced before the magistrate on Monday for police remand.
