The House witnessed noisy scenes over the acute water shortage faced by the residents of Porvorim plateau.
Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Dilip Parulerkar tabled a Private Members’ Resolution in the House demanding the Government to set up 50 MLD Water Treatment Plant next to National Highway at Guirim.
“The setting up of water treatment plant will solve water problem in places of Porvorim, Siolim, Mapusa and Calangute,” he said.
Acknowledging the gravity of the issue, PWD Minister Churchill Alemao told the Assembly that provision of total 50 MLD in Assnora would be ready by 2010 December-end.
This, he said, will raise the capacity to 110 MLD that will cater to entire Bardez populace till 2025.
“To improve the distribution, three overhead reservoirs have been undertaken and is nearing completion,” he said.
Former minister Dayanand Narvekar blamed the non coordination between the power department and water supply for water crisis.
“Water cannot be pumped out due to water failure…there is no coordination…this affects the water supply,” he lamented.
“The PWD minister Churchill Alemao should give a concrete assurance to the people of Porvorim or face agitation,” he said adding “the minister should set a deadline and say that if he fails to meet that he will not enter the assembly again.”
Leader of Opposition Manohar Parrikar too echoed the said problem.
Following this, the resolution was withdrawn even as the minister said it will ask PWD Department for a detailed project report.
