PONDA: A truck driver from Hubballi was killed, while two others were seriously injured in an accident involving three vehicles near the Biodiversity Park at Suktollem, Mollem, on Sunday evening.
According to the Collem Police, the deceased has been identified as Khwaja Mohiddin Maniyar (48), a native of Hubballi. Bus driver Bhima Naik of Ramnagar, Karnataka, and a woman passenger, who sustained major injuries in the accident, are undergoing treatment in the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) at Bambolim.
Police said that the bus, which was en route to Benguluru from Goa, was speeding and collided against the oncoming truck, resulting in the truck driver’s death.
The bus driver and the woman passenger who was seated in the front seat too got trapped inside the vehicle and firefighters and locals collaborated to rescue them.
Both the bus and truck were severely damaged in the accident.
Six-member family from Porvorim who was returning home in an SUV, escaped with minor injuries after the bus collided with their vehicle before ramming into a roadside tree. Ponda Station Fire Officer (SFO) Sushil Morajkar and his team rushed to the spot and rescued the injured.
