Hunting expedition in Bicholim turns tragic

One of two residents of Wavti Vathadev, Bicholim accidentally killed while shooting porcupines

BICHOLIM: A hunting expedition for two residents of Wavti Vathadev, Bicholim turned tragic on Tuesday when one of them was accidentally killed while shooting porcupines.

According to the sources, 55-year-old Santosh Yeshwant Govekar and 39-year-old Anand Yeshwant Gawade decided to go on a hunting expedition to a nearby forest. 

They waited for a while near a porcupine shelter and when they saw the prickles coming out, Santosh tried to stop them but Anand immediately fired at them but unfortunately, the bullet hit Santosh killing him on the spot. 

Anand immediately called the relatives of Santosh, who rushed him to Bicholim Primary Health Centre but, the doctors declared him brought dead. 

Bicholim Police arrested Anand under Section 302 of IPC.

On Wednesday afternoon, a Bicholim Police team comprising PI Sanjay Dalvi and others under the guidance of DySP Gurudas Gawade and North Goa SP Utkrisht Prasoon along with the accused visited the spot and recovered bloodstained shirt of Santosh. They also found two bullets in his pocket. 

Forest Range Officer Vivek Gaonkar and a team of forensic lab experts were also present. The victim’s blood samples have been sent for testing.  

Bicholim PI Sanjay Dalvi is investigating the case.
