A 23-year-old woman preparing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) allegedly died by suicide at her home in Dehradun’s Chandrabani area, police said. The deceased was identified as Riya Kumari.
According to family members, Riya was a bright student who had scored 96.7 per cent in Class 12 and later emerged as a college topper. She had been preparing for the NEET examination for several years and was reportedly under stress regarding the upcoming re-examination.

The incident came to light when her mother went to call her for lunch. After receiving no response, family members opened the room and allegedly found her hanging. Police were immediately informed and reached the spot to begin an investigation.
Officials said a suicide note was recovered from the scene. In the note, Riya expressed love for her parents and apologised for what she described as her inability to achieve success in her studies and career.
According to police, the note stated, “Mom and Dad, I love you” and contained expressions of disappointment about her academic journey. Investigators are examining the note and other evidence as part of the probe.
Dehradun Circle Officer Ankit Kandari said the student was preparing for a re-examination scheduled later this month. Following the post-mortem examination, the body was handed over to the family. Police said further investigation is underway.
