PANJIM: Some tourists rescued a light contractor for the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) who was allegedly thrown off the old Mandovi Bridge by two unidentified persons, after they were caught red-handed while trying to steal the decorative lights installed on the bridge past midnight.

According to sources, Sonu Kankonkar, a light contractor for IFFI would have been dead after he caught two unidentified persons red-handed attempting to steal the lights decorated on the Bridge. They allegedly tried to kill him by throwing him off the Bridge. Panjim Police, who have launched a hunt for the accused, are in the process of identifying the duo via CCTV cameras and other possible leads.
“While I was driving along the old Mandovi Bridge, I saw two persons trying to take off the lights fixed all along the stretch… I rolled down the window glass of my car and questioned them what they were up to, but they walked away. I stepped out and chased them. They rushed to their bike but got stuck as it didn’t start. When I reached closer to them, they held me tight and threw me off the Bridge,” Kankonkar recalled.
The light contractor managed to hold onto a pole of the bridge when the accused escaped. On hearing his cries, some tourists who were passing by rescued him and sent him to the hospital in an ambulance.
“The thieves tried to beat me while I was hanging onto the bridge. They ran away later. I shouted for help which is when some Hindi speaking persons came to my rescue. They called the ambulance in which I was taken to the hospital,” he said.
The Panjim police have registered a non-cognisable complaint against the accused.
