PONDA: Four cattle died after being hit by an unknown vehicle along the national highway at Curti-Khandepar in the wee hours of Thursday while three others that sustained serious injuries were shifted to gaushala at Shikeri.

Pained over the incident, the locals demanded that the police conduct a thorough inquiry and nab the accused driver.
With no rescue operations from government agencies for four hours, social workers Viraj Sapre and Nikhil Desai along with locals rushed to site and commenced that rescue operation. Some government veterinarians and NGO doctor too joined them.
The locals demanded that gaushalas be setup in all talukas.
Viraj Sapre and Nikhil Desai said, “It’s been ten years people have been demanding a cattle pound in every taluka. In the absence of gaushala the stray cattle injured in the accidents are left to die on the road.”
An eyewitness said the accident occurred at 4 am however the injured cattle received the medical aid from Animal Rescue Squad only at around 9.30 am.
Viraj said after the construction of the four-lane highway the vehicles move at high speeds and at night the highway plunges into darkness on account of the non-functional streetlights which results in accidents.
