An IIT Roorkee graduate has sparked an online debate after revealing why she rejected a lucrative 32 LPA job offer in Gurgaon and chose to remain in Bengaluru with a lower salary.
Sneha Priya, 25, completed her BTech in Computer Science in 2023 and has spent the past three years working in Bengaluru. Although she was unhappy with the work environment at her previous company, she said the city itself became home because of its pleasant weather, welcoming people and strong support system.
While searching for a new opportunity earlier this year, Sneha received an attractive offer from a Gurgaon-based multinational. The role included a generous salary, joining bonus and relocation benefits. However, despite calling it her “ideal offer,” she decided not to relocate.
Explaining her decision, Sneha said safety was one of her biggest concerns. Drawing from her experiences in Delhi-NCR, she recalled incidents involving scams and rude behaviour that made her uncomfortable about moving there. She contrasted that with Bengaluru, where she believes people are generally more respectful and focused on their work.
Family and friends also influenced her decision. Her brother and sister-in-law live in Bengaluru, while several close friends are based in the city, making it a comfortable and familiar place to live. She also admitted that the prospect of searching for accommodation in Gurgaon and adjusting to a new lifestyle discouraged her from relocating.
Apart from safety and convenience, Bengaluru’s moderate climate played a role. Sneha said she preferred the city’s weather over the extreme summers and winters experienced in North India.
Eventually, she accepted another job in Bengaluru, even though it offered a lower salary than the Gurgaon role. Reflecting on her choice, Sneha said career decisions should not always revolve around money. She added that finding peace of mind, a healthy work environment and long-term happiness mattered more than accepting the highest-paying offer.
