PERNEM: Illegal sand mining continues in Tiracol river where thousands of cubic meter sand is getting extracted almost every day. The stretch of Tiracol river, right from Torxem to Keri, is freely used for sand extraction while damaging the nature. Since sand mining is banned in the state, this activity of extracting sand is mainly carried out during the night. It begins at around midnight and continues till dawn.
Earlier, the extracted sand was being stocked along the river. However, now the sand is being directly filled in vehicles for transportation.

From last 10 years, the people especially farmers having their farms along the river bank of Tiracol, have been raising their voice and complaining against the illegal activity. Because of this constant sand extraction, the depth of the Tiracol river has increased along with sliding of land along the river, while broadening its width.
Farmers having agriculture land along the river side have once again raised concern over this illegal activity since their thousands of square metres of agriculture land is being getting washed away in the river.
Uday Mahale a local said, “The sand extraction activity has once again commenced in Tiracol river at night. The concerned departments should look into the matter,” Mahale added.
