MARGAO: Concerned citizens have called on the Municipality and the Department of Legal Metrology to inspect the alleged illegalities taking place at the New Market in Margao, where shops have been set up in open areas without permission.
Calling it a case of land grabbing within the Margao Market, the complainants have pointed out that the open spaces meant for pedestrians in some places, have been illegally converted into shops that have illegal shutters as well, and also drew attention to the number of illegal street vendors that have cropped up, especially during weekends.

The Margao Municipal Council (MMC), which recently cleared two such shops from the market, said they are monitoring the situation and will take action against any such illegalities after completing the due process.
It may be recalled that this issue had been raised in June 2021, after the South Goa District Collector had sent a report to the MMC Chief Office along with photographs of the encroachments, with directions to check on these violations. MMC then verified the photographs and closed those shops.
