MARGAO: Calling the government ‘dictatorial’ and accusing it of destroying beautiful Goa, a group of social activities held a silent protest at Margao on Monday. The activists gathered outside the South Goa District Collectorate building where a function was held to mark Goa’s Liberation Day and voiced their anger against the government.

“Goans have been fooled by the government by converting the MPT into MPA; our State is being destroyed by nationalising its rivers. What is the point of celebrating Liberation Day,” questioned Jack Mascarenhas, President of ‘Goyche Fudle Pillge Khatir’.

He remarked that Goa is not the same as the other States of the country. “The Goa government has no right over the land of the State, how does the Central government have a claim on Goa’s rivers?” he asked.

Mascarenhas also recalled the Supreme Court judgement of 2021 instructing collectors to issue directions to the Mamlatdars of Goa to initiate action against the encroachment of community lands in the State. “Till date, no action has been seen,” he lamented, and appealed to the youth to join in and fight for the cause.

Santan Pereira, another activist, questioned the government on the rights of Goans, and condemned the indiscriminate destruction of the environment.“Why are we celebrating liberation when the environment is being destroyed with passing day?Goans should not be part of this fake celebration,” said Pereira.
