PANJIM: In a bid to resolve the vexed garbage issue, the Goa government will have interactive sessions with all the panchayats and municipalities of the State between December 13 and 22 to guide them on how to devolve a collection system for dry waste in their respective areas.
The sessions which will be facilitated by the Goa State Pollution Control Board will be held in various taluka headquarters over the 10 days.
The interactive sessions, which the government hopes will be attended by all elected representatives of the grass root bodies is expected to help them to get their act together on dry waste collections.
According to officials familiar with the matter, the village panchayats are expected to have dry waste collected from all the households and establishments and keep it at a designated place in the village from where it will be collected by an agency and taken for treatment.
According to a tentative timetable drawn up by the government, the first of these interactive sessions will be held in Panjim at the ESG auditorium for the village panchayats and municipalities of Bardez taluka on December 13 in the morning and Tiswadi in the afternoon in the same hall. Quepem and Sanguem will have their session in the morning and afternoon of the following day at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao.
Dates for interactive sessions for other talukas will be decided later.
The State government has been trying to set up a dry waste collection system throughout Goa as promised by the government for over a year now. The garbage problem continues to haunt the State with there being no system of collection in place except in the case of Panjim and few other towns and villages, but currently there is no way to treat the waste.
