2011 census states 65,475 were lacking in toilet facilities

PANJIM: The final figures for fourth series of Census of India, which have been released, focus on households and amenities indicating that Goa is still found wanting in basic amenities such as toilets or electricity; but usage of mobiles, television, vehicles and other modern gadgets is on the rise.
Also land phones are losing out to cell phones.
Out of the total 3,22,813 households covered in the 2011 census, 3,12,761 households had electricity as major source of lighting, while 2,57,338 had toilet facilities within households but 65,475 were lacking toilet facilities within households.
An interesting observation was on the use of cell phones where 1,73,533 households were using cell phones and the once popular land phones are gradually being phased out with only 39,000 using them, while 75,139 households use both land phones and cell phones.
The use of television has, however, increased with 2,61,842 households having the idiot box .
The use of two-wheelers has also shown a growth with 1,83,814 households having two wheelers while 71,765 households are connected to the world through computers and laptops.
In the rural-urban divide, out of the total 1,24,674 households in rural Goa, only 1,19,208 use electricity as the major source of lighting. Officials from the Census department say that the 4,300 odd households in rural Goa are still without electricity.
Likewise 36,251 households in rural Goa do not have toilet facilities within their dwelling units. As many as only 88,423 households in rural Goa have this amenity.
Interestingly, households in rural Goa use mobiles with census data indicating a figure of 63,553 using cell phone, while 16,559 use landlines and 24,990 use both.
In rural Goa, 64,591 have two-wheelers, 93,015 possess television sets while computer and laptop users number 18,809.
Also interesting is the fact that in urban Goa out of the total 1,98,139 households a total of 1,93,553 have power supply, 1,68,915 have toilets facilities while 29,224 do not have toilet facilities within their dwelling units.
A total of 1,68,827 have television sets, 22,449 still use landlines while 1,09,980 are connected to cell phones and 50,149 use both.
Urban Goa also has more households in possession of latest modes of transport and communication such as two-wheelers and laptops. However, urban Goan householders have more four-wheelers and household gadgets in comparison to rural Goa.
Officials from the census department, Goa, disclosed that the data disseminated is the fourth series of the census and this one focuses on households and amenities.
The first three were focused on households, householders, State and district primary data and the fourth was on households.
