IS VAIBHAV SOORYAVANSHI HEADING TOWARDS A NADAL-LIKE INJURY NIGHTMARE?

India’s teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has taken the cricketing world by storm, but former South Africa batter Daryll Cullinan has raised concerns about the long-term impact of such an intense workload on a growing body.

Cullinan’s warning comes after comparisons were drawn with tennis legend Rafael Nadal, whose glittering career was repeatedly hampered by injuries linked to Müller-Weiss syndrome, a rare degenerative foot condition. Despite winning 22 Grand Slam titles, Nadal endured years of chronic pain and physical setbacks, highlighting the risks associated with intense training from a young age.

While Sooryavanshi’s situation is entirely different, Cullinan believes the 15-year-old’s aggressive batting style and heavy workload could place excessive strain on his developing body. The youngster has already broken multiple records, including becoming the youngest IPL centurion and registering the fastest List A fifty.

In a LinkedIn post, Cullinan admitted he was amazed by Sooryavanshi’s talent but worried about the physical toll of repeatedly swinging a heavy bat at such a young age.

“I’m in awe of this young man, but what worries me are injuries. At 15, playing so much cricket and swinging so hard, I fear for his wrists, elbows, joints and other areas that are still developing,” Cullinan said.

The former South African batter also referenced Sachin Tendulkar’s battle with tennis elbow in 2004. The injury threatened to derail the Indian icon’s career despite occurring after more than a decade of international cricket.

Cullinan pointed out that Sooryavanshi’s body is still growing, making it more vulnerable to stress-related injuries. While modern recovery methods and sports science are more advanced than ever, he believes careful workload management will be crucial.

As Sooryavanshi continues his rapid rise through the ranks, selectors and coaches may need to strike a balance between maximising his immense talent and protecting his long-term health.
