PANJIM: The new Mandovi Bridge witnessed huge traffic congestion on Sunday morning following closure of the old bridge.
The ongoing construction work of the new cable-stayed bridge over River Mandovi was the reason for the closure but several motorists were caught by surprise as there was no prior intimation. The move, a source said, is to allow the trucks carrying concrete without causing hindrance to traffic. “Since Sunday is a holiday and there is hardly any traffic, it is best to carry out the heavy works. The other related work that does not require stopping of the traffic is carried out on week days,” said the source.
It is learnt that late Saturday night and the morning hours of Sunday are reportedly reserved for such works. Calangute police said they deploy the traffic staff to ensure smooth movement of traffic.
