PORVORIM/TIVIM: Silver and gold ornaments worth about Rs 10 lakh were stolen in a major burglary at a jewellery shop in Colvale-Bardez in the wee hours of Wednesday.
According to Mapusa Police, four persons bent the shutter and broke into the jewellery shop belonging to Udai Salkar at about 2.30 am. Noticing four burglars enter the shop, a neighbour residing in the vicinity alerted the police. However, by the time police could reach the spot, the burglars had fled with the booty.
Police said the shop owner had stated that the burglars stole 15 kgs of silver ornaments and 60 grammes of gold, all worth Rs 10 lakh.
Speaking to Herald, Pramod Salkar, who lives in Mapusa, said he had received a call from a man from Colvale at about 2.30 am, stating that the jewellery shop, situated on the ground floor of Salkar Multi-complex, has been broke open.
“The neighbour told me that he could see two thieves outside the shop and another two inside the shop. He also told me that he had informed the police,” said Salkar.
Salkar said the shop belonged to his brother Uday, who lives in Porvorim, and he immediately informed his brother and left for Porvorim to get his brother.
“We reached Colvale at about 3.30 am and police had already reached the site. The shop was broke open with the help of wooden logs, which were lying behind the shop, where a construction is going on,” said Pramod.
Pramod further said the neighbour had called up at least 25 people, none responded for fear that the burglars could have been armed with weapons.
Police pressed the dog squad and finger prints experts into service, but could not gather any clue into the burglary. PSI Ratnakar Calangutkar is investigating the case.
