PANJIM: At a time when the country is reeling under the shooting oil import bill and consumption of petroleum products hitting record highs, Kala Academy is doing its bit and has decided to set a trend by asking its staff to use bicycles for official work.
On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, Kala Academy has procured five 18-gear bicycles for its staffers to commute within the city and also to patrol its vast campus.
Chairman Vishnu Surya Wagh said the initiative is essentially to save fuel, tackle traffic congestion and protect the environment. “This will not only save fuel but also money spent on fuel. Besides, it will do its bit to ease the horrific traffic chaos in the city and protect the environment,” Wagh said Tuesday.
Each bicycle, costing around Rs 14,000, also has safety gear such as helmets, elbow and knee pads. “We are setting a trend…The bicycle also has a bag on the front to keep papers while traveling,” he said, appealing to other government departments to switch to cycles.
