Kidnap accused slits throat in Court

In a shocking incident, a man, accused of kidnapping a minor boy, slit his throat in Children’s Court open hall today moments after the Judge remanded him to further custody.
Sameer Sheikh was later rushed to Goa Medical College for medical assistance but was discharged soon thereafter.
The dramatic development left the Court President P V Sawaikar, public prosecutor, defense counsels and those present in the hall baffled.
Nobody knew how the alleged accused gained access to the unidentified sharp object when infact he was in police custody and was escorted by police team in and outside the prison.
“The Judge was writing the order after remanding Sameer to 14-day judicial custody. I was busy referring case files when we heard a commotion. We saw drops of blood flowing from his neck…he was taken to GMC”, PP Poonam Bharne told Herald.
The alleged accused received minor injuries and was brought back to the Court with bandages on his neck. It is learnt that the Court has asked Mapusa police to file a case of attempted suicide against the alleged kidnapper.
The Mumbai youth is booked for kidnapping the four-year old grandson of a rag picker Salim Sheikh from Karaswada in September.
Even as a case was registered at the Mapusa police station, the alleged accused, who is the complainant’s son-in-law, had already traveled to Mumbai with the minor. He had demanded Rs 50,000 from Salim in exchange for his grandson’s life. Police who were intimated promptly left for Mumbai and arrested the kidnapper after laying a trap.
