MARGAO: “Konkan Railway Police have little scope to control liquor smuggling in railways. The responsibility of the railways is to catch the offenders and hand them over to Goa Police as they have the powers to prosecute,” KRC commercial manager D S Lingaraju said on Tuesday.
He was addressing the media on the achievements of the Konkan Railway on its silver jubilee year.
“70 percent planning of the double tracking of KRC route has been complete without anybody losing any land and property. The remaining will be soon complete with some planning changes,” assured Lingaraju.
“KRC has enough land acquired to have double tracking in the future which will be enough now and no land or land owner will be affected,” Lingaraju added.
Highlighting the achievements of the KRC, PRO Baban Ghatge said, “KRC boasts of having started 180 summer special trains and also registering significant growth in the past year in all its services. We have begun two new trains and extended another two and also have 16 freight trains.”
KRC also has traveller centric projects like Wi-Fi Services, CCTV Surveillance System, Konkan Railway Enquiry System, bio toilets and others.
“Nearly 76 km of solar powered LED lighting has been completed on the KRC route the remaining 2162 km will be completed during the next financial year,” Baban said.
“For liquor cases we are keeping a strict vigil on the station as it is a tourist season. About the Herald expose, we have done our official work and handed over the case to Excise Department for prosecution as it is in their ambit. Otherwise our checking is continuously on,” said Santosh Dessai KR Police Inspector.
Herald had exposed the liquor smuggling racket where two of the prime smugglers were arrested and liquor seized.
