Tension has gripped Kudne-Sanquelim after the death of a local resident, Sakha Malik, allegedly linked to a persistent foul smell in the area. Seventeen days ago, Malik reportedly fell ill and later died after complaining of a strong, nauseating odour.
Following his death, his wife and children also began experiencing similar discomfort, prompting villagers and panchayat members to investigate. Residents discovered that the foul smell was emanating from a nearby house, leading the village sarpanch and locals to file a police complaint against the property owner.

According to locals, for several months, the accused resident, identified as Sakharam Malik, had been dumping wet chicken and fish waste behind his house, causing an unbearable stench across the village. Villagers allege that Sakharam often reacted aggressively when confronted, which discouraged others from raising the issue earlier.
The incident has sparked outrage in the community, with villagers demanding immediate government intervention and stricter waste management measures. They claim that the odour has become so severe that residents, including those visiting the nearby grain society, are forced to wear masks to cope with the stench.
Authorities have taken note of the complaint, and further investigation is underway to determine whether the unsanitary conditions contributed to Malik’s death.
