Lalit Modi has opened up about an extravagant family tradition that sees him gift his son a Ferrari every year on his birthday. The former IPL commissioner revealed that the annual present is rooted in a personal childhood disappointment that stayed with him for decades.
In a candid interview with ANI, Modi said his son has accumulated 12 Ferraris after receiving one every year since turning 21. He explained that he adopted the tradition because he never received a Ferrari from his own father despite wanting one while growing up.

According to Modi, he only became a Ferrari owner on his 40th birthday when his brother-in-law gifted him the luxury sports car. The memory, he said, played a major role in shaping his parenting philosophy.
“I went through a life where I always wanted things and had to find a way to get them,” Modi said, adding that he decided he would give his children what they desired if he had the means to do so.
When questioned about whether such gifts amounted to good parenting, Modi defended the approach, arguing that abundance had made his children more grounded rather than more demanding. He claimed that his son, despite owning a collection of Ferraris, is careful about finances and frequently encourages him to spend less.
The businessman also reflected on his family’s background, describing his father as a charismatic social figure who enjoyed a lavish lifestyle. Modi joked that he may have inherited some of those traits and perhaps taken them even further.
His comments have sparked discussion online about wealth, parenting and whether fulfilling every childhood wish is beneficial or excessive.
