BICHOLIM: A male leopard was killed after getting trapped in a snare, which was meant for wild boar at Wadaval, Latambarcem.
According to sources, the incident took place on Tuesday morning when some locals spotted the leopard trapped inside the snare near Sateri temple at Wadaval, Latambarcem. They informed the forest officials but by the time they reached the spot the leopard had already died.
“We came to know about the incident at about 7.30 am and informed the officials. There was bit of a delay and by the time the officials arrived the leopard had already died. In such situations there should be quick action. There are many snares in the area and there is also some hill cutting in these areas, which has forced the wild animals to enter human habitat,” Babasaib Rane, a panch told.
Pernem RFO Vilas Gawas informed that looking at the leopard’s condition it seems that it was in the trap almost for a day and may have died due to exhaustion.
“The trap was probably laid some months back as it was rusted and the leopard was in the trap for quite a long time. If the villagers had spotted it in advance we could have saved it”, Gawas added.
