PORVORIM: Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar has called on village panchayats, municipal councils and MLAs not to encourage constructions of shops, garages, etc, 25 meters from either side of the State highway and 50 meters from major district road to enable the PWD to undertake road widening works.
He was speaking after unveiling the plaque at Ambeni-Madel to mark the beginning of widening and improvement of State Highway No1 from Karaswada junction to Assonora in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza, PWD Minister Sudin Dhavaliker and Tivim MLA Kiran Kandolkar. Parsekar stated that local bodies should act swiftly and demolish such structures if erected.
Francis D’Souza mentioned that rapidly growing number of motor vehicles warrants the widening and improvements of roads. The population of Goa is around 14.50 lakh and there are around 11 lakh vehicles in the State. Every month around 6000 vehicles are being registered in Goa. Accidents take place practically everyday and hence the need of the hour is to widen the existing roads and make them one-way wherever possible for vehicular traffic D’Souza said.
PWD Minister Sudin Dhavaliker stated that around 80 per cent of the sewerage work in Mapusa has been completed and the balance will be completed within the next six months. The government has increased water tariff to prevent its misuse, he said. The increase water charges are applicable for the usage of water above 25 cubic meters and hence it does not affect poor people Dhavaliker said.
Tivim MLA Kiran Kandolkar thanked the government for widening and improving the 7 kms stretch of road from Karaswada to Assonora at a cost of Rs 11 crore.
Earlier Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar laid the foundation stone and unveiled the plaque for the road work. Chief Principal Engineer (PWD) Dattaprasad Borker welcomed the gathering and Shakila Sheikh compered the function and proposed the vote of thanks.
