Locals demand repair of Betul Fort, Customs house
HERALD REPORTER
MARGAO, AUG 2
Residents of Betul have urged the authorities to pay attention to the Betul Fort and repair the Customs house to boost tourism in the village.
Locals lamented that the Fort has been lying in ruins for long and the abandoned canon lying uncared for years now is evident of the apathy shown to the area by the authorities.
Says a local resident, Sudhakar Joshi: “Earlier, the national Tricolour was hoisted near the Fort, but the entire area appears a neglected lot. Two years now, government officials came to the spot to inspect the Fort, but nothing much has changed here”.
Joshi said the posterity should be made aware of the rich culture and heritage about the significance of the Betul Fort. “The children should be explained the presence of the abandoned canon at Betul. This has been lying abandoned for years now,” he said, and sought to know why the government is paying little attention to the restoration of Betul Fort when all efforts are being made to renovate the Cabo de Rama Fort.
Joshi and other locals were critical over the condition of the Customs House at Betul. “This house is lying in ruins. Why is the government not initiating measures to restore the customs house?” he asked.
