PANJIM: Confirming that State Congress President Luizinho Faleiro had tendered his resignation in October 2015, the AICC leader and Goa desk in-charge Dr Chellakumar said the decision on the resignation is pending before AICC President Sonia Gandhi.
Faleiro on Friday announced that he is ready to step down from any position, if the MLAs feel that with his resignation the party can form the government in Goa. Faleiro said that ‘if anyone wants me to resign, I am ready to quit from any position in the interest of party and organisation’.
The former Chief Minister said he did not take up the President’s post on his own, but the party central leadership wanted him to put the organisation in place. “I was told to take charge during that crucial period and to build the party. I did my job and accordingly I submitted my resignation,” he said.
“If even one MLA feels that we can form the government and for that I need to resign, I am ready to quit,” he said. “My job is done,” he added.
Faleiro was appointed as State unit President in October 2014.
Chellakumar said that Faleiro had submitted his resignation way back, somewhere in 2015 (October 2015) voluntarily, but the same was kept on hold by Party President Sonia Gandhi.
“Faleiro was asked to continue till the State Assembly elections in 2017. Now the elections are over, we won it under his leadership, the resignation is before the President, she will have to decide,” he added.
“Anyways, party is also going for elections at State, district, block and booth level,” Chellakumar added further.
The State Congress unit is also bracing up for fresh organisational elections, including elections for the post of Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President, in a phased manner beginning from July.
Responding to questions on reports related to 14 Congress MLAs seeking a change in the State leadership, Chellakumar said ‘there is no such demand before us’.
“I had a meeting with all the MLAs, one to one as well as joint meeting. We discussed many issues on organisational elections, post winning reactions, etc, but all those are internal matters,” the AICC leader said declining to comment further.
