PORVORIM: Residents of Britona and Salvador-do-Mundo are up in arms against land-filling activities being carried out at Charmanas-Brittona by cutting mangroves and demanded action against the culprit.
After observing that land filling is being done at Charmanas-Britona, the residents informed about the matter to local MLA Rohan Khaunte, who rushed to the spot and called Deputy Collector Pundalik Korjuvenkar, Bardez Mamlatdar Dashrath Gawas and officials of Water Resource Department, Captain of Ports and CRZ authorities at the site.
On conducting investigation, it was revealed that land filling is being done by a company and no government authorities granted permission for it. However, the company owner stated that Salvador-do-Mundo Panchayat had issued them temporary no-objection certificate and land filling was being done to construct floating jetty.
The deputy collector directed the company to stop the work and advised his officers to file a complaint against the company with Porvorim police in this regard. Salvador-do-Mundo Sarpanch Rajesh Savoikar agreed to cancel the NOC issued to the company.
