MAPUSA: Mapusa Municipal Council on Tuesday resolved to install two units of five tonnes per day bio-methanotion plant at cost of Rs 5 crore.
During a meeting, Council resolved to install the two plants at Kuchelim.
Chairman Ryan Braganza informed that each plant will cost Rs 2.5 crore which will be funded under the Fourteenth Finance Commission. These two units will treat 10 tonnes of wet garbage every day. The project file will be forwarded to GSUDA and will be tendered by the municipality.
However, during the meeting, Councillor Tushar Tople suggested to approach the Goa Waste Management Committee to set up a plant for Mapusa. Councillor Kavlekar suggested that a power point presentation should be held on specification of the plant and how the plant would functions for the councillors to understand what exactly the project is.
Meanwhile, Braganza said that this plant will be set up by an agency after it is tendered. The agency will set up and operate the plant for five years and later handover them to the municipality. The agency will also train the municipal staff on how to handle the plant and go about.
Councillors also resolved to accept inward of FC Goa to maintain and upgrade the ground located at Ganeshpuri for a period of one year.
It was also resolved to issue NOC to 54 shops located near Mapusa fish market to take electricity connection. The councillors claimed that since there was no electricity connection, the shops were kept closed due to which the shop owners were unable to earn their livelihood.
However, even though they were not operating the shop, they were charged monthly rent.
At the meeting, the councillors also highlighted the water shortage and regular water supply issue in different wards of Mapusa.
Council Tople said that since last three-four years Mapusa has been facing water shortage. “Other parts of Bardez do not face water issue; Mapusa is the only part that faces water crises and irregular water supply throughout the year,” he said.
Executive Engineer Nitin Nevrekar informed the Council that there are various issues that have led to this problem. “Due to digging of road by the highway contactor, many pipelines have been damaged. Secondly, there are more than 200 illegal connections in Mapusa. To add to this, people are renting rooms to 4 to 5 families at a time,” he said.
Nevrekar further informed that they are planning to install three new pumps to boost the water pressure. He also asked the council to note down different locations which face water problems and that once the locations are identified, it can be resolved on immediately.
Meanwhile, Nevrekar has asked the council to legalise all the illegal connections before December 31 otherwise the PWD will charge them commercial rates.
Council then asked for a dedicated tanker for Mapusa to supply water in the town when the supply through pipelines is stopped.
Later, Councillor Tople proposed to name the District library of Mapusa in memory of Padmashree Suresh Gundu Amonkar as a tribute to his work in education and literature.
