MARGAO: Against the backdrop of its battle with the Tourism Department over the issue of grants, the Margao Municipal Council’s carnival parade, which was held for the first time in Fatorda, evoked a great response.
This year, the parade route was from the old market circle to Borkar superstores in Fatorda. The floats were well received by a large number of people, who had thronged the streets and to a get a glimpse of the action.
King Momo Shalom Sardinha began the parade by reading out the decree and was accompanied by Queen Momo Mumtaz Shaikh. The MMC and its organising committee members were also present.
The floats, depicting themes like ‘save the environment’ and ‘save the girl child’, were impressive, while there was a clear emphasis on ‘save the coconut tree’. The FC Goa float also drew a big applause from the crowds along with King Momo’s float, led the parade. Most floats were seen in Panjim on Saturday.
Besides the floats, entertainment troupes performed cultural songs and dances, while artists had covered themselves in body paint and portrayed a host of personalities.
The programme ended at around 8 pm. There was confusion among parade participants in the end as they were informed that floats on ‘save the coconut tree’ may not be considered for prizes. There was massive traffic congestion in and around Fatorda before and after the carnival programme.
