Margao, June 23: Markets across Margao were abuzz with activity on Tuesday as residents flocked to shops and roadside stalls to purchase essentials for the traditional Sao Joao celebrations.
With the festival set to be celebrated on June 24, vendors reported strong demand for turmeric leaves, commonly used to prepare the traditional Goan delicacy patoleo. Shoppers were also seen buying colourful crowns and festive headgear crafted from flowers, leaves and other decorative materials associated with the celebrations.

The festive spirit was visible throughout the town as families and revellers made their final preparations for Sao Joao, one of Goa’s most vibrant and eagerly awaited monsoon festivals.
Vendors expressed satisfaction with sales, noting that the annual festival continues to draw enthusiastic participation from people of all age groups. The colourful displays of traditional headgear and the aroma of fresh turmeric leaves added to the celebratory atmosphere in the markets.
Sao Joao, celebrated in honour of St. John the Baptist, is marked by unique traditions across Goa, including community gatherings, music, dancing and the wearing of decorative floral crowns, making it a cherished cultural event in the state.
