Margao MLA and PWD minister Digam bar Kamat expressed confidence ahead of the forthcoming Margao mu nicipality elections, saying the civic polls would reflect public approval of the gov ernance and development initiatives undertaken in the city. Speaking to the media, Kamat said the Bharatiya Janata Party in Margao was fully prepared for the mu nicipal elections and that the selection of candidates would be based purely on merit, with no place for fam ily raj. He said civic issues, infrastructure and public safety would influence vot er sentiment in the munici pal elections, adding that he was confident the electorate would endorse the work carried out at the city level. In this context, Kamat said the decision to increase the number of wards in the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) from the existing 25 to 27 had been finalised. He said the move was aimed at improving representation and addressing administra tive requirements within the municipal limits, par ticularly in areas that have seen growth over the years. The MLA said the ward expansion decision was now final and would be implemented as part of the restructuring of the MMC’s electoral framework, with the additional wards ex pected to have a bearing on the conduct of the upcom ing municipal elections. Kamat also announced a major fire-safety upgrade for the MMC market, with a new water pipeline to service fire hydrants. The Rs 80-lakh project aims to ensure adequate, reliable water supply during fire emergencies in the busy commercial complex. He said the new pipeline would strengthen fire-fight ing preparedness in the market, long plagued by emergency water shortages, significantly improving safe ty for traders and the public.
