The issue con cerning the daily wage workers of the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) remains unresolved. How ever, in view of the grow ing nuisance and health concerns caused by unat tended garbage, the MMC on Tuesday resumed waste collection across the city. The move comes after days of mounting public complaints over uncollect ed waste piled up along streets, residential areas, and market zones follow ing the workers’ protest. Former MMC Chairper son Savio Coutinho in formed that the Council has given an assurance to the workers that their pending work orders will be issued within two days. “The Council has assured that the orders will be re leased shortly. The work ers have, therefore, agreed to resume their duties even without the formal work order for the time being,” Coutinho said. He further added that the future course of ac tion will be decided after two days, depending on whether the Council fulfils its commitment. Accord ing to sources, the daily wage workers decided to return to work temporari ly in the interest of public health and to avoid further deterioration of sanitation conditions in Margao and its surrounding areas. However, the situation remains partially unre solved as 12 workers who had won a High Court case regarding their regulari sation have not resumed work. Their daily wage or ders have expired, and un der the High Court’s ruling, the Council cannot renew those temporary orders. Until a final administrative decision is taken on their regularisation, these work ers are unable to rejoin duty, said Coutinho. Municipal sources re vealed that the Council is under pressure to find a legally compliant and prac tical solution to reinstate these 12 workers without violating the court’s direc tive.
