MARGAO: For more than four years, Margao has waited for a state of the art waste management plant and a functional door to collection of waste and their scientific disposal. This would include medical and electronic waste.
The people of Margao have been betrayed. The plant has been built but incapable of functioning in the manner it is meant to. Mixed garbage still comes to the Sonsodo plant, along with medical waste and animal and human body parts. The door to door segregated collection of garbage has remained a fictional exercise.
Meanwhile at Sonsoddo, the situation each monsoon, goes from bad to worse with leachate entering ground water and affecting fields further and further from the dump site.
Herald has been in the forefront of reporting this. It now demands immediate solutions on the people’s behalf. In the first of its direct engagement of bringing the people, the administration and the elected representatives together, Herald-HCN will hold a People’s Sabha, as a part of its Battle for Margao. This will be attended by the MLA’s of Margao, Fatorda and Curtorim, the Chairperson of the MMC, the CEO of Fomento Green which manages the plant and a key people’s representative. In addition key stake holders, NGO’s former Chairpersons of MMC will be in attendance who will be invited to share their thoughts.
This will be held at BPS Club, Pajifond, Margao from 7 pm, on Tuesday June 23. The one hour programme has been structured as follows. A panel discussion presented by Rupesh Samant of HCN and moderated by Sujay Gupta, Group Editor Herald Group. This will be followed by invited interventions of other stake holders and then an audience round where members of the audience can interact and ask questions.
Finally, we will draft a Margao Declaration on solving the garbage problem with the government giving a public commitment on key issues aimed at solutions.
While we would like everyone to attend the hall accommodates 80 people. So entry will be on a first come first serve basis and will close at 6.45 pm.
